Healing With Crystals - General (See also Quartz and Zeolites)
Last update 21 10 07
Since the '60's, the use of Crystals as a tool used for healing purposes, has grown in popularity. A rise in Spiritual Consciousness, particularly in the Light of the Dawn of the New Millennium, is linked to our increasing awareness of the New Age.
But Crystals have been used for healing since before Egyptian times, and it is only with advances in geology and quantum physics that we are beginning to understand the energy and physical properties which have for so long been a magical mystery to us. We are all made up of the same elements as the earth, and the crystals and minerals that are recycled by Mother Nature, which is why we all recognise within crystals the subtle elements within us all.
Anyone can benefit from healing, if they are open and ready to receive. Complex physical or emotional issues are often best dealt with by a qualified practitioner, whether in crystal or some other therapy, but for general balancing, and opening your own awareness you can easily work on yourself with practice. By preparing your space, clearing away clutter, perhaps even lighting a candle and playing soft music, you can select a stone suitable for the task in hand. Either consult the properties of each crystal in the lists below, or use your own intuition, and sit quietly, holding the stone. Contemplate the breathe, taking your own awareness into yourself, note any tension, and let it dissolve into the earth and sky. Then let your awareness come to the stone, feel its shape and energy within your hand, and in your body. Let the impressions the stone makes come naturally, and when you feel happy and re balanced, release from the process and allow yourself to centre and come back to your present.

Labradorite
Labradorite is a fascinatingly beautiful mineral, whose charm is not fully noticed and may be overlooked if not viewed from the proper position. Generally a dull, dark looking mineral with no special virtue until the colourful shimmer is observed glowing on the surface. Labradorite can produce a beautiful play of light across cleavage planes and in sliced sections called labradorescence. The usually intense colours range from the typical blues and violets through greens, yellows and oranges. Some rare specimens display all these simultaneously.
Labradorite treats disorders of the eyes and brain, relieves stress and regulates the metabolism. Can be used to treat colds, gout, rheumatism, relieving menstrual tension, and lowering blood pressure

Named in antiquity after the Greek "Malakhe" (Marshmallow plant) in allusion to its startling green colour. Typically found as crystalline aggregates or crusts, it is often banded in appearance, like agates. Also often found as botryoidal clusters of radiating crystals. Single crystals and clusters of distinguishable crystals are uncommon, but when found they are typically acicular to prismatic. It is also frequently found as a pseudomorph after azurite crystals, which are generally more tabular in shape.
This beautiful mineral has been treasured for it's ornamental qualities for thousands of years. The name Malachite is derived from the Greek word "Malakhe" or marshmallow plant because of the startling green color. The ancient Egyptians used it in both statues and adornments. They also ground it to a powder and, having mixed it with water, painted it on their eye lids. It was also used as a pigment for paint in Egyptian tomb paintings and much later in European art during the 15th century. The Romans used it to fashion amulets where it was known as Peacock Stone and dedicated to the Goddess Juno.
Considered a stone of transformation and balance, assisting in ones spiritual journey. It is capable of stimulating ones intuition and insight whilst helping in recognizing and clearing past negative influences and experiences. It is also said to help unlock the meaning of dreams. Pyrite/Haematite
Haematite:-from the Greek, haimatites, "bloodlike'" in allusion to vivid red colour of the powder. Hematite is rather variable in its appearance - it can be in reddish brown, ocherous, masses, dark silvery-grey scaled masses, silvery-grey crystals, and dark-grey masses, to name a few. What they all have in common is a rust-red streak.
Once used in Ancient Egypt to make scarabs. Aids mental clarity, concentration and memory. Calms anxiety and induces peaceful sleep. Physically it aids the absorption of iron and the formation of healthy blood, improving the oxygen supply to the body and promoting good health.
Pyrite:- named in antiquity from the Greek "pyros" for "fire" because sparks flew from it when hit with another mineral or a metal. Pyrite is a very common mineral, found in a wide variety of geological formations from sedimentary deposits to hydrothermal veins and as a constituent of metamorphic rocks. The brassy-yellow metallic colour of Pyrite has in many cases lead to people mistaking it for Gold, hence the common nickname 'Fools Gold'. Pyrite is quite easy to distinguish from Gold, it is much lighter, but harder and cannot be scratched with a fingernail or pocket knife.
Used by crystal healers to help with addiction problems and lung/breathing complaints. This stone was used by Mexican Indians to produce magic mirrors.

Emerald
The name emerald is thought to be from the Ancient Greek word ‘smaragdos’ meaning ‘green stone’ which was originally applied to a variety of green coloured minerals.
Emerald is used as a gemstone. The most desired colour is an intense grass green which is considered very valuable, even when visible inclusions are present in the faceted gem. Emerald gems are commonly enhanced with oils & resins, and they are generally considered to have undergone such treatments unless they are specifically stated as being untreated or not enhanced. There is some controversy as to the definition of a 'true' emerald. Some say that a true emerald must have the impurity chromium, although some intense grass green coloured 'emeralds' coloured only by vanadium impurities look exactly the same as the 'real emeralds' with chromium colour causing impurities.
Emerald is one of the earliest known gem minerals to man. It has been assigned a very large number of occult properties over the last 6000 years. Some of these Traditional beliefs are that emerald is a symbol of immortality, it is good for the eyes and eyesight, it cures snakebites, encourages and preserves chastity, cures dysentery, prevents epilepsy, promotes cleverness, courage, eloquence, honesty, prosperity and a great number of other beneficial qualities. In general it can be said that emerald is believed to protect against illnesses, physical danger and evil and that it can improve your mind and character.

Cinnabar
China and USA
A colourful mineral that is unique to the mineral colour palette-an attractive cinnamon to scarlet red. Well shaped crystals are uncommon and the twinned crystals are considered classics among collectors. The twinning in cinnabar is distinctive and forms a penetration twin that is ridged with six ridges surrounding the point of a pyramid. It could be thought of as two
scalahedral crystals grown together with one crystal going the opposite way of the other crystal. Cinnabar was mined by the Roman Empire for its mercury content and it has been the main ore of mercury throughout the centuries. Some mines used by the Romans are still being mined today. Cinnabar shares the same symmetry class with quartz but the two form different crystal habits
Heals & purifies the blood. Imparts strength and flexibility to the physical body, stabilizes weight and enhances fertility.
Said to attract abundance - try keeping cinnabar in your wealth corner.

Aragonite
Aragonite is a common carbonate mineral. It is unfortunately often thought of as the poor cousin to calcite. But aragonite is an interesting and attractive mineral in its own right. It forms interesting habits and can have a soft pretty colour. Its modes of formation and relationship to calcite are both curious and intriguing.
A soft gemstone, often formed near mineral springs, it derives its name from the River Aragon in Spain, where it was named in 1788. It is usually white or yellow in colour, though sometimes green, brown or pink.
Aragonite is thought to be helpful in removing stress and anger and helping one prepare for the calm needed in meditation. Said to improve patience, practicality and responsibility.
Aragonite was once the traditional gift for young adults, as it is said to bring balance and empowerment to the turbulent emotions of youth and help channel their energies constructively.

Galena/silver/fluorite
USA
Galena is a common and popular mineral for rock hounds. Its characteristic cubes, distinctive cleavage and high density make it easy to identify and a favorite in high school geology labs. The structure of Galena is identical to that of halite, NaCl. The two minerals have the same crystal shapes, symmetry and cleavage. Some Galena may contain up to 1% silver in place of lead. The large volume of Galena that is processed for lead produces enough Silver as a by product to make Galena the leading ore of Silver.

Azurite
Azurite is a very popular mineral because of its unparalleled colour, a deep blue called "azure", hence its name, derived from the arabic word for blue. The colour is due to the presence of copper, and the way the copper chemically combines with the carbonate groups (CO3) and hydroxyls (OH). Azurite has been used as a dye for paints and fabrics forcenturies. Unfortunately, at times its colour is too deep and larger crystals can appear black. Small crystals and crusts show the lighter azure well. Azurite is often associated with its close cousin, malachite

Kyanite
From the Greek word ‘kyanos’, meaning blue. Kyanite is a polymorph with two other minerals; andalusite and sillimanite. A polymorph is a mineral that shares the same chemistry but a different crystal structure with another, or other, minerals. Kyanite is an attractive mineral that has a near sapphire like blue colour in some especially nice specimens. Kyanite has a unique characteristic in that it has a wide variation in hardness, in the same crystal. The hardness of kyanite is approximately 4.5 when scratched parallel to the long axis of the crystal and approximately 6.5 when scratched perpendicular to or across the long axis. Other minerals usually have variable hardness on different crystal faces due to a different concentration and orientation of the atoms in the structure
As a metaphysical stone Kyanite aligns all chakras instantly and can be used to open chakras. It helps promote communication, encourages tranquillity and psychic awareness. Excellent for meditation and dream recall. A wonderful stone for the New Age, Kyanite is also excellent for working on the throat chakra and third eye. Never needs cleaning or clearing.
Lepidolite mica
From the Greek lepidion - "scale" and lithos - "stone" Its synonym is Lithium Mica. Lepidolite includes tabular to prismatic crystals with a prominent pinacoid termination. Lepidolite’s four prism faces and two pinacoid faces form pseudo-hexagonal crystal “books”. The sides of the crystal often tend to taper. Also as micaceous, lamellar or granular rock-forming masses
Colours vary from violet to pale pink or white and, rarely, grey or yellow.
As a metaphysical stone Lepidolite is associated with stability and acceptance and can assist in change and transition. It used in that context for mental problems and in reducing illusion and muddled thinking . Lepidolite is attributed with the power to aid and strengthen muscles, particularly the heart.
